Bio Hello, I am William Healy, and I am the owner and principal designer of Healy Design Inc. I offer landscape design services to both homeowners and landscape contractors and endeavor to create designs that are sound and distinct. I have lengthy experience helping others turn their needs into realities through services ranging from consultation to the creation of a tailored master landscape design plan. I have been involved with the landscape industry for over 30 years. My first career was in special education. Later in my teaching career, I coordinated a horticulture department in a vocational training center. I helped create rehabilitation opportunities for developmentally disabled individuals through greenhouse, nursery, and landscape related skill training. During this period, I started designing for others, and I have been designing full time since my retirement from teaching. I feel fortunate to have been involved in two careers for which I have some ability, and a deep appreciation. My prior career in education also helped me hone my ability to listen closely to clients and offer practical solutions. Regarding my education in design and horticulture, I have participated in numerous courses and programs offered by organizations such as the Ohio State University and the Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD). APLD is an international association dedicated to promoting excellence in landscape design. I have been a member of the APLD Board of Directors since 2009, and currently chair the International Landscape Design Awards Program. When I design, I attempt to combine the beauty of nature, the potential of the site, and the needs of the client. Capturing some of nature’s beauty and bringing it into a client’s space is very fulfilling. As a child, after school in autumn, I would run to Mr. Cooper's red maple tree to see what new amazingly colored leaves awaited me on the sidewalk. Can't explain the running, for I don't recall any other kids coveting the many colored beauties, but I was pretty excited. I hope I have not lost that appreciation for nature's beauty, and try to bring that out in my designs for others, although I have had to lay off the running. For the many years I have owned and operated a small ornamental tree nursery. It has strengthened my knowledge of which plants offer the most beauty, the best reliability, and require the least amount of maintenance for this climate. I reside on the west side of Akron with my wife and our many pets. |
